ARTIST STATEMENT

Since completing an MA in painting at the Royal Academy in 1993 Joy has continued to paint and exhibit in London.

The inspiration for her recent series of paintings lies in the ever-changing rhythms of movement in the natural world. In the latest work she uses the transparent surface of Perspex to explore the effects of layering countless ‘threads’ of paint.

While striving to achieve a sensation of congestion or ‘crowding’ she also invites the viewer to explore these fibrous layers. Anderson’s aim is to create images which gradually allow the viewer to discover what lies beneath the external turmoil- to move through dynamic configurations where lines are straight and vigorous to quiet passages where they are fluid or only partly visible.

The free, random movement of marks is sometimes controlled by strict geometry and at times allowed to transgress these boundaries thus establishing both chaotic and tranquil territories and a sense of order within disorder.
